Asilomar
Backyard
A great landscape is measured not by what they contain, but by how they make us feel.
The project reinterprets the experience of the Pacific coast within the boundaries of a private residence in Marina, California. The landscape establishes a dialogue between the built environment and the surrounding ecology, drawing on the clients' love for the beach. The goal of the project is to capture the natural beauty of the Monterey Peninsula through natural sand, stone, driftwood, and coastal textures.
The Asilomar Backyard is rooted in the rhythm of coastal California and its laid-back way of living, creating a seamless relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces. The strongest connection to nature begins at home, where landscape becomes more than a backdrop; it shapes the way we live, gather, and reconnect. Designed as a private retreat, the garden provides a place to unwind while bringing the restorative qualities of the California coast into everyday life.
The landscape exclusively utilizes native and drought-tolerant plantings that reflect the surrounding ecology while supporting long-term resilience. A central olive tree anchors the design as its primary focal point, welcoming visitors into the space while remaining carefully framed through the interior living room window. A timber pathway guides visitors through the landscape, evoking the quiet experience of walking through a coastal resort before arriving at a sunken fire lounge designed for gathering and relaxation.
Adjacent to the lounge, a Zen garden features a meditation deck that provides a flexible space for yoga, reflection, and quiet retreat. Together, these outdoor rooms are connected through an intuitive circulation that unfolds as a continuous landscape rather than a collection of individual elements.
The project demonstrates that landscape architecture is not simply an extension of the home, but a means of strengthening daily life through nature, memory, and thoughtful spatial experience.
